McLain Community High School

Mission:  We offer adults instruction in Basic Skills (i.e. reading, spelling, math), English as Second Language, preparation for the GED test, and classes leading to a Jeffco School District diploma.  The Literacy Program provides one-on-one tutoring days or evenings for students who need extra help to master their subjects.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Most sites use volunteers as one-on-one tutors, class aides, or child care providers.  At the present time our greatest need is for tutors for English as Second Language students  (only with intermediate level students).  We also need a tutor for a low-level English speaker in the evening.

Tutors: Tutoring and classes take place both days and evenings at McLain and Arvada Middle School.  In addition, class and tutoring sites include public libraries in Jefferson County.  Tutors must have a high school diploma or GED and attend a 3 1/2 hour workshop sponsored by the Literacy Coalition of Colorado.

ESL: English-as-Second-Language tutors work with intermediate learners (never beginners) from around the world and experience the pleasure of learning about other cultures.  Knowledge of another language is not necessary.

Other Opportunities: Volunteers also assist in classrooms, help with enrollment or book distributions, and aid at special events.
